The Land Registry controlled the ownership and usage of land. Changes of ownership required the payment of fees which was collected using stamps.
The first issues of 1862 used embossed revenue stamps. However in 1873 the Land Registry changed over to the use of the key plate designs.
Land Registry stamps continued in use through both the pre-decimal and decimal Queen Elizabeth II issues.
The most common cancellation appears to be a perfin design consisting of a crown above the letters "LR", enclosed within a circle.

The stamps could also be cancelled by manuscript, such as the above block with the written date "21/9/88".
