It is said that the Post Office did not approve of designs that incorporated crowns. However, many firms and indeed official departments incorporated a crown and many were in use for many years.
The die "SB-over-crown" shown above is one of the few dies that used different size pins, presumably in this instance to give the impression of the crown sparkling.

Many firms used fancy designs. Wm. Marples and Sons used their trademark, a cluster of three Hibernia flowers.

Not all designs are quite so attractive. Indeed some are little more than a few holes bunged in a machine !
There are several designs similar to the "unknown user" illustrated above, all with London postmarks and perhaps all down to the same user. Having the design bisecting the stamp can't have been helpful when trying to remove a single stamp from the rest of the sheet, so perhaps the perfin die was originally intended for other duties ?
