Repairs to a plate often resulted in the introduction of various flaws, or features.

The pair above illustrate significant strengthening of the frame lines around each stamp.

Many stamps were repaired by re-applying the original roller. However it was difficult to align the roller accurately, this example from plate 27. The roller was misaligned to such an extent that traces of the "star" can clearly be seen in the 'D' square.

The same roller could also cause a build-up at the edges of the roller, giving rise to an effect referred to as a "Transfer Roller Line". |

Whilst re-applying the roller would strengthen the main impression, the corner letters might well be weakened by the process, as illustrated opposite.
