The name "spoon" is a reference to the distinctive shape of this duplex cancellation. This style of cancel was issued to many of the larger towns throughout England and Ireland, plus one for the town of Wrexham in Wales.
The first of this type of cancel was issued to Hull on the 21st December 1853.
