The Penny Red was the first stamp to be sold and used abroad. It was first issued to Post Offices in the Crimea and Malta from 1854.

The Penny Red can also be found overprinted for use in Cyprus. Several different types of overprint can be found and are mostly fairly common. Indeed many large blocks survive.
