In the early 1980's the Post Office issued some books of stamps and one sheet at a discount rate. In order to identify such discounted stamps the Post Office underprinted the stamps with one of four different symbols. Three symbols took the form of stars, indicating they came from Christmas booklets. The fourth symbol was a letter 'D' presumably simply indicating a discount.
Some of these underprints were also used on Christmas commemorative stamps.
