| DIE 1A | DIE 1B |
The head, having been copied from a photograph, tended to give rise to very blotchy looking printings. In order to try and reduce this effect, the die ("Die 1a") was subsequently modified ("Die 1b"). Whilst there are a few visual differences between the two dies, the differences illustrated above are probably the easiest to see.

However the subtle modifications in die 1b still proved unsatisfactory. This led to the original die 1a being heavilly reworked, producing "Die 2". This time, the differences between the two dies are very pronounced ; for both the ½d and 1d values, the hair and beard are very much lighter than with die 1. There are numerous other differences to be found, the most noticable being the shading of the lion in the 1d value.
